Commentary: A small reprieve

I got my first proper grey hair when I was pregnant with my daughter. For some reason I was full of perverse enthusiasm for it; perhaps it made me feel like a Proper Grown Up.

In subsequent years, a handful more grey hairs appeared. To my great surprise, one day I discovered that a prominent silvery strand had turned brown again towards the root. What excitement! If I could only work out how I managed it, just think of the franchise opportunities!

As it turns out, it's quite common for the colour-producing cells in a hair follicle to sputter on and off before finally dying out completely; some people even end up with zebra-striped hairs for a little while.
